Blood in urine can be caused by urinary tract or kidney infections, such as bladder infections or kidney stones. While in many instances the cause is harmless, hematuria can indicate a more serious condition. Blood that you can see is called gross hematuria. Depending on the condition causing your hematuria, treatment might involve taking antibiotics to clear a urinary tract infection, trying a prescription medication to shrink an enlarged prostate or having shock wave therapy to break up a bladder or kidney stones.
